The Besseggen ridge is well known by Per Gynt's furious reindeer-back ride in Henrik Ibsens drama; "Have you seen that Gjendin ridge? It cuts along with an edge like a scythe for miles and miles - -".
About 35.000 hikers cross the Besseggen in the period mid-June - mid-September every year.
The hike takes about seven hours, with its highest point at 1743 metres above sea level. Besseggen itself is a part of this walk. This hike between the crystal clear Bessvatnet lake at one side and the Gjende lake with its emerald-green glacial colour at the other side gives you an experience of life. The view on the National Park of Jotunheimen is nothing less than magnificent!
Most of the hikers take the Gjende Boat from Gjendesheim to Memurubu.
By the Gjende Boats you can reach as far into Jotunheimen as possible whitout travelling on foot. Both Memurubu and Gjendebu are exellent starting points for tours in the Jotunheimen mountains. For more information and fare tables of the Gjende Boats, click this link: www.gjende.no
Enjoy the hike and enjoy Henrik Ibsens drama of Per Gynt. In the play, Per claims to have stalked a reindeer buck, got astride the animal, and then rode the reindeer bounding wildly down the Gjendin ridge (Besseggen). Per described his experience to his mother Aase like this:
"Have you seen That Gjendin ridge? It cuts along With an edge like a scythe for miles and miles. You’re able to look from that height of snows And scars and glaciers sheer down The precipice to the glassy lakes Sixteen hundred feet below On either side. - We tore along The ridge together through the wind..."
