Text by Edvard Grieg Museum.
Troldhaugen is a living museum which comprises Edvard and Nina Grieg's villa, the composer's hut, the tomb, the Troldsalen concert hall and Edvard Grieg Museum. The old buildings and even the gardens are well preserved. The interiors of the villa and the composer's hut are still authentic. Grieg's Steinway, a gift on Edvard and Nina's Silver Wedding Anniversary in 1892, still stands in the living room.
The decorations and furnishings of the villa reflect a combination of the Grieg's desire for simplicity, Norwegian traditions and personal taste. Simple wooden panelling and unpainted wooden floors are dominant features in all rooms. In Grieg's day and age, these rustic interiors must have seemed a radical preference to visitors who were more accustomed to Victorian surroundings.
