Lyngør has been acclaimed the best preserved village in Europe. The village near the sea has architecture from the golden era of the sailing ships, with small white-painted houses typical of this area. The invention of the steam engine led to the end of the glory for Lyngør, as there was no work and most of the inhabitants left. There were no new houses built, and the narrow paths of concrete and stone were left the way they were.

As time went by, this idyllic island became a popular tourist attraction - well-known even beyond the national borders. Lyngør invites you to walks along the narrow paths, a stop on a bench or in one of the restaurants on the islands. The village is spread on 4 islands with about 100 inhabitants, and there are no cars on the island. The average summer temperature is around 25 degrees Centigrades. The sea is crystal clear and you can find cosy deserted creeks and smooth bare rock-face where you can relax and go swimming.

The free and protected area in the skerries is a favourite place for sailors to anchor to enjoy the enchanting nature of Lyngør. You can find many flowers that are wild growing, including rare trees that you only find on Lyngør. To visit the island, you can travel by boat. There is a ferry from main land Gjeving.
