Vestfold County Museum is Vestfold's oldest cultural-historical museum, taking over from Tønsberg Museum and Tønsberg Maritime Museum. In 1939 the collections from these museums formed the basis for the new county museum.
Vestfold County Museum's aim from the beginning was to give an increased understanding of everyday life of the population in Vestfold throughout the ages, and how history influences the local environment. The exhibits present Vestfold's cultural history through, amongst other things, the use of natural resources both at home and abroad. Emphasis has been laid on the whaling industry, shipping, town and village history,and the second world war.
Situated at the foot of Slottsfjellet with the ruins of the medieval castle, Tunsberghus, the museum has a special responsibility for the spreading of local medieval history.
